Eventually most of us progress to the stage where we want to breed our pet pythons or boas. Sometimes its so that our hobby can generate a little money to start paying for itself and sometimes its just because of the challenge of breeding and propagating our captives. Whatever the motivation it can turn out to be rewarding, or fruitless and frustrating depending on how much we know about the process and how quickly we gather experience. First it helps to understand a little about genetics so we don't end up producing inferior animals or further damage the captive gene pool. Often we need to cycle our boids to induce breeding. The term Cycling stands for creating light and temperature cycles similar to the snakes natural environment that prepares them for mating. Once eggs are laid incubation becomes important. Hatchlings from egg layers and Neonates from live bearers have special husbandry requirements for their first couple of weeks. |
